Auto Insurance Requirements

New Jersey, just like every other state, requires all drivers to have auto insurance coverage. The state requires the following minimum limits:

• Bodily injury coverage for each person for $15,000
• Bodily injury coverage for each accident for $30,000
• Property damage coverage for $5,000

Liability coverage consists of bodily injury and property damage coverage. Bodily injury coverage keeps your assets protected if you are found liable for causing an accident. Property damage, on the other hand, keeps your assets protected if you are found liable for an accident you caused.

Additional Auto Insurance Coverage

Here is a list of optional, but highly recommended auto insurance coverage options:

• Comprehensive: If your vehicle is physically damaged by an accident such as fire, theft, glass breakage, animals, or vandalism, this will cover the cost of repairing or replacing your car.
• Collision: If your vehicle is physically damaged by an accident with another vehicle, this will cover the costs of repairing or replacing your car.
• Uninsured/underinsured: This will keep you protected if you get into an accident with another motorist who doesn’t have insurance. The other party must have also caused the accident.
• Roadside assistance: It is easy to get cover yourself with this coverage in the event you need a tow, your car runs out of fuel, or you need a jump start.
