New Jersey doesn’t require boat owners to purchase a boat insurance policy. But it is possible for finance lenders to require owners to purchase insurance.
Boat/Watercraft Coverage
Here is what boat insurance covers:
- Comprehensive and collision: Whether your boat is damaged from falling trees, explosions, vandalism, theft, or other weather-related elements, comprehensive will cover the damage that your boat sustains. Collision coverage will take care of damage to your boat if you get into an accident with another boat or watercraft, no matter who causes the accident.
- Uninsured/underinsured: Similar to auto insurance, uninsured/underinsured will cover you and your passenger’s injuries if you are involved in an accident with another boater who doesn’t have insurance.
- Medical payments: This covers the medical bills for both you and your passengers following an accident with injuries. It doesn’t matter who is at fault for the accident.
- Fishing equipment and personal items: This covers your personal items and fishing equipment including marine binoculars, scuba gear, and other items that become stolen or lost.
Keep in mind that boat insurance will not cover general wear and tear such as insect damage, mold, or damage that was caused by marine life or animals.
